What Is Curriculum Night? What Clayton County Public Schools Parents Should Know

If your child attends Clayton County Public Schools and you’ve seen “Curriculum Night” on the school calendar, you may be wondering exactly what happens and whether parents should attend.
The short answer: Curriculum Night gives parents a closer look at what their child will be learning during the school year and what will be expected in the classroom.
Clayton County Public Schools has described Curriculum Night as an opportunity for teachers to share information about the curriculum being taught in classrooms and explain the school’s instructional goals.

What Happens at Curriculum Night?
Curriculum Night is different from the Open House or Meet & Greet that typically takes place before school starts.
Open House is generally about meeting teachers, finding classrooms and getting familiar with the school. Curriculum Night focuses much more on academics.
Depending on the school and grade level, parents may hear about:
● Subjects and academic standards students will cover this year
● Classroom and homework expectations
● Grading practices
● Tests, assessments and academic benchmarks
● Classroom procedures and expectations
● Resources students will use throughout the year
● Ways parents can support learning at home
● Important ways to communicate with teachers during the school year
It can also be a good opportunity to ask questions about something you may have noticed during the first few weeks of school.
Curriculum Night, however, generally is not designed to be an individual parent-teacher conference. If you need to have a detailed conversation about your child’s grades, behavior or another personal matter, it may be better to schedule a separate meeting with the teacher.
2026 Clayton County Curriculum Night Dates
For the 2026–2027 school year, official Clayton County Public Schools calendars currently show Curriculum Nights occurring on different Thursdays based on school level.
Elementary Schools
Thursday, September 3, 2026
5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
For example, Michelle Obama STEM Elementary Academy and B.C. Haynie Elementary both list Curriculum Night for September 3 from 5–7 p.m. (Clayton County Schools)
Middle Schools
Thursday, September 10, 2026
5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Morrow Middle, Riverdale Middle and North Clayton Middle all list Curriculum Night for September 10 from 5–7 p.m. (Clayton County School District)
High Schools
Thursday, September 17, 2026
5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Both Jonesboro High School and Lovejoy High School currently list Curriculum Night for September 17 from 5–7 p.m. (Clayton County Schools)
Parents should still check directly with their child’s school in case there are school-specific schedules, presentations or changes.
Why Parents Should Consider Going
Curriculum Night can be especially helpful because the school year is already underway. By September, teachers have had time to get to know their students, and parents may already have questions about assignments, grading, homework or classroom expectations.
Even if everything is going well, Curriculum Night gives families a better idea of what students are expected to know by the end of the year and how parents can help them get there.
