Clayton County Community Spotlight: Heather Bankhead and Her Mission to Support Families Facing Childhood Cancer

  • 2 min read

Clayton County is filled with individuals who step up for others in meaningful ways, and Heather Bankhead is one of those people making a difference every day.

A proud member of the Clayton County community since 2009, Heather has built her life around family, service, and advocacy. As a mother of three, she has experienced both the joys and challenges of parenting, including navigating her daughter’s childhood cancer journey. Through it all, she has remained committed to turning her experiences into something that helps others.

Heather’s children continue to thrive in their own paths. One attends M.D. Roberts Magnet School for Media Arts, while her oldest is pursuing music. Her story is rooted in resilience, but even more than that, it reflects a deep commitment to lifting others up.

What stands out most about Heather is her dedication to raising awareness around childhood cancer. She is active in the community, consistently showing up to support families who are going through similar experiences. Whether it’s offering resources, sharing her story, or simply being present, she has made it her mission to ensure no family feels alone during difficult times.

At the same time, Heather believes Clayton County has even more potential when it comes to connection and collaboration. She notes that one of the biggest challenges is making sure resources are visible and accessible to those who need them most, especially families navigating childhood cancer. Strengthening partnerships and communication across the community is something she hopes to see grow.

One of Heather’s most memorable moments speaks directly to the heart of Clayton County. When her daughter was diagnosed with childhood cancer in 2013, the Clayton County Police Department stepped in to support her family. That support didn’t stop during treatment, it has continued over the years. Experiences like that are what make this community feel like family.

Heather continues to give back by using her time, her voice, and her resources to help others. She encourages people to turn their pain into purpose, something she lives out daily through her work and outreach.
