Marshall “Major” Taylor (1878-1932) was an American professional cyclist and the first African-American to become world champion. He was born into poverty in Indianapolis and worked as a bicycle-riding messenger before becoming a professional cyclist. He achieved success in both sprint and endurance cycling and became the first African-American to win world championships in 1899 and 1901. He won over one hundred races and set several world records. He experienced racism and discrimination throughout his career, but overcame adversity and became an inspiration for many. He was a pioneer of the sport and an important figure of the civil rights movement. He is remembered for his courage and determination in the face of prejudice and is considered a cycling legend today.
